We have all been in a house I guess, where there are old metal windows, the ones that used to have ice on the inside as well as the outside in winter time.
Now, starting to have a bit of a revival in post architecture designs on a retro 30’s and 70’s styles.
If your fortunate or un-fortunate to have some of those old steel windows in your home, chances are your insurance will be requesting at least the ground floor windows to have locks fitted.
As you guess when you look hard, there is not that much meat in which to fix locks to these windows. Some window lock

manufactures have had the same thoughts and have come up with some genius designs that allow you to fit a lock to the window without even drilling a hole.
Probably the most popular lock is the one that retro fits in the vent gap of the window handle itself.
One lock I fancy, as being a good one is made by Era. The metal window snap lock has been carefully designed to fit on the 70’s style metal windows. The clever thing is, you have to drill holes, but the lock has been designed that carefully the holes can be drilled and the self tapping screw screwed in secures this lock in double quick time. One of the benefits also, is the lock automatically locks when the window is closed, but you will always need a key to open it again, these locks also come keyed alike, so if you have quite a few to do order them keyed alike.
Some Metal windows have fan lights at the top, these also, should be locked and Era has come up trumps with a designed that straps around the window stay, which means if you cant move the stay the window cant be opened. these also, don’t require any drilling or fixing to the window and can be fitted in a matter of seconds. the only down side is that they can be fiddly to put on and take off, and it is so easy to forget to fit it back then that it, no more security!
No matter what is best for you and your application, LocksOnline would have a lock for your metal
window.
Check out our Metal Window Lock section on our site, but if your still not sure, pop a call over 0845 230 0201 and have a chat with John in sales, John used to sell these when he was a local manager for Jewsons so his knowledge is quite extensive.
You don’t really need to concern yourself with this task of fitting these locks as most of these are easy to fit and at most, only require a screw driver.
Doing a bit of research Crittall Windows have been around since the 1850’s so they must have built some good stuff for the name to be still in manufacturing of metal windows. Their web site shows some history in a time line with some interesting reading, around the time of the war they converted the manufacturing procedures and started to make munitions for the war effort, to cap it off, they made the windows for the Tower of London, so pretty pucker stuff.
